Niqui Carter: In Between Spaces

  • Niqui Carter: In Between Spaces 143 Roebling Street New York, NY, 11211 USA (map)

RePop is proud to announce In Between Spaces, an exhibition of photographs by Niqui Carter. The exhibition will open on Friday, April 11 at 6:30 p.m., with wine and refreshments served by Sarya's and beer provided by Brooklyn Brewery. Please join us at RePop to celebrate Niqui's work!

The exhibition will include 15 large photographic prints that have been digitally altered to resemble the saturation and starkness of Polaroids of the past. The photographs in this series take an unexpected and revealing look at what can be seen above, below and in between our line of sight when simply walking down any given street.

Originally trained as a painter, using a digital camera and synthetic filters, Carter creates new forms and perspectives that could easily live as an abstract painting. She combines digital processing with a documentary approach to abstract the urban landscape. This practice gives her the freedom to explore the way light touches an object and the ambiguity that exists in the shape of a line or curve of a shadow. The blending of both disciplines gave birth to the images that will be showcased in her upcoming show at RePop.

Niqui Carter has shown her work in Brooklyn, Minneapolis and Paris. The artist received a B.A. in Studio Arts from the University of Minnesota and studied Photography at Parsons, Paris. Her work has also been published in Birdsong, a Brooklyn-based magazine. Carter was born in Minneapolis and has lived and worked in New York for over a decade.
